Initiative 7 - Advocacy, Public Policy and Philanthropy

Dreams aren’t usually realized without solid research, strategies and execution. To achieve our goals, we must first make a powerful business and economic case for women’s enterprise development, and then educate people on our contributions to job creation, economic growth and social cohesion. This will require highly effective advocacy by women entrepreneurial leaders around the world, and the growing support of policymakers and prominent mainstream business leaders. Strategic and targeted philanthropic giving can also help drive positive change.

We must join hands and make common cause to bring about change. The time is NOW!

  • Analysis. Use the Roadmap to 2020 process and World Bank Doing Business series to identify obstacles and policy gaps that undercut the robust development of women’s entrepreneurship in specific countries and regions. Also identify potential opponents, allies and champions, and identify strategies that might be used to overcome these obstacles.
  • Action. Partner with international experts to provide training for national and regional stakeholders on advocacy and public policy. Promote policies and conduct campaigns to overcome obstacles and gaps.
  • Sharing. Develop case studies on advocacy successes and failures, and share them internationally via the internet, videoconferences, social media and at global best practice conferences.
  • Philanthropic Giving. Encourage women entrepreneurs to become engaged with philanthropy. Work with partners to share case studies and best practices, and show how targeted giving can accelerate women’s enterprise development.
